Abandoned mother dog and four puppies safe at SPCA

What was initially a sad sight turned into a happy ending for the mom and her four puppies who were found in the SPCA's driveway by Kloof and Highway SPCA inspector Kerrie Andrews.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA said they will never turn an animal away. This was after the recovery of a mom dog and her four puppies at the top of the SPCA’s driveway yesterday (August 28).

Brigitte Ferguson from the Kloof and Highway SPCA said the mother was tied to their signboard.

“They were found by inspector Kerrie Andrews who gently loaded the scared and cold mom and puppies into her car and took them straight to the clinic.”

Ferguson said they were clueless as to when they were dropped off, how long they had been sitting in the cold or who had left them there.

Once in the clinic, the mom and her four puppies were given a warm bed under a heating lamp, hot water bottles were provided for the puppies, and the mom was given a bowl of delicious food.

“She was ravenous, and once she had finished eating, she fell asleep with her puppies suckling on her, clearly exhausted from her ordeal but knowing that she now was safe. After a thorough check by our vet, everyone was given de-worming medications, and they will continue to be monitored by our caring staff,” said Ferguson.

Although leaving dogs at the top of the driveway is not the way to do it, the SPCA staff said they would rather that than the dogs be abandoned in a bush or tied to a tree, never to be found.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA can only continue their work with support from the public.
