Guard dog survives massive fire

The staff of the Chameleon Guard Dogs company are thrilled to be reunited with K9 Caeser, one of their canine guards who came out of a massive fire unharmed.

DOG owners heaved a sigh of relief after learning that their dog survived a massive fire on July 8. The Chameleon Guard Dogs company in Assagay are happily reunited with K9 Caeser, one of their guard dogs whom they believed had died in the fire that broke out at a business premises on Piet Retief Road in Queensburgh.

On the day of the incident, ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson reported that the fire had engulfed a building, grass and bushes.

“Paramedics attended to incidents where trucks had been blown over. Trees and branches had fallen on the streets, damaging vehicles,” he said.

Telling the story to the Highway Mail, Chameleon Guard Dogs team members said Caesar was in the building where the fire started.

“Jenny Alexander received a call from the client who was with Caeser, telling us that the warehouse is on fire and they are struggling to get Caesar out. Immediately, our team members were dispatched, and they worked in conjunction with Durban Metro Police and the fire department. After a while, a call came through telling us that Caeser was gone. It was not an easy evening for the staff – we had just been told that our dog had just died in the fire.

“At 3 o’clock Tuesday morning, one of the inspectors from our clients called me excitedly, shouting ‘Caeser is alive!’. We immediately went there and picked him up. He was a bit dazed by the smoke when we found him,” they said.

Caesar was found unharmed, roaming around but dazed by the smoke of the fire.

“He was in the kennel for security reasons, and everything was burnt except his kennel. Till this day, we still do not know how he got out or survived the fire,” said founder Hilary Redmond.

Caeser was found with no physical damage on his body – his last check-up was on Friday, and he has been monitored and cared for.
