Church Alliance for Social Transformation programme makes a difference

Twelve potential leaders are to join the Church Alliance for Social Transformation (CAST) Just Leaders programme.

AMANDA Shangase was one of 12 ‘Just Leaders’ in the programme piloted by the Church Alliance for Social Transformation (CAST) last year.

As a member of KwaDabeka Baptist Church, one of CAST’s 14 partners in KZN, the 23-year-old was encouraged by her pastor to join and learn how to help make a positive difference in her church and community.

CAST is a registered non-profit organisation that journeys with local churches to equip and empower them to transform their communities. The Just Leaders programme is one of their initiatives aimed at developing leaders who are passionate about leading people in their local areas towards social justice – and helping others do the same.

The course is run over six in-person gatherings during the year, taking place on weekends to accommodate participants who work during the week. This is complemented by weekly homework and practices to help deepen and apply the learnings. The group also continues correspondence through online channels.

Shangase shares that her most valuable lesson learnt from the course was that: “Solving problems does not need to be done impulsively. We need to first understand what is happening before diving in.

“The programme does not just grow you as a leader; it is also a time of inner healing and introspection – this contributes to making you a better leader,” she added.

The programme will start on April 19, with a preliminary information session on April 6 to provide those interested a full overview of the programme. Applications close on Friday, April 5.

“CAST is deeply grateful for the generous support received at their previous fundraising events in helping to make outreach initiatives like this possible and would like to appeal to the Highway community to consider sponsoring course fees to support more leaders on their journey this year,” said Rolan Gulston, CAST communications officer.
