Girl Guides lend a helping hand

A girl guides group in the Wyebank show an act of kindness.

IN an effort to be a helping hand in the community, the Girl Guides of Wyebank Secondary School donated clothes to the Ubuntu Crisis Centre in Wyebank.

The Girl Guides is a Scouting group that aims to empower young women. They share knowledge about womanhood while doing their due diligence of community work. The group at Wyebank Secondary School has shown they are no different.

Led by Nonhlanhla Mkhize, who is also a teacher in the school, the group of girls meets on Wednesdays and Fridays. “After discovering the important role that mothers play in a girl’s life, I decided to group these young girls so we can make progress in their lives. Girls in this group are taught to invest in themselves from a young age.

“We believe that girls grow up to be women who can influence the world – so if they can be instilled with valuable lessons, we believe this would in, turn, influence the world in a positive way,” she said.

Mkhize said the girls are taught and reminded of simple day-to-day activities, from cleaning their room to being kind and helpful to their peers and community.

With the rise in the pink eye infection, Mkhize said it was a perfect chance to practise what they preach – which is kindness and giving back to the community.

“We have an organisation in our community that helps house people, and with the pink infection, we thought it would be a good idea to donate cleaning products that will help the home fight this infection. The girls were also happy to donate their quality pre-loved clothes. With this, we are becoming part of the solution and helping where we can,” she said.

The donation was handed over to the home on Wednesday, March 20.
