‘Irate-payers’ pool together for better service

Hillcrest residents devise a plan for better service delivery.

FED-UP residents in the Hillcrest area gathered to voice their concerns over the water-supply issues. Meeting at the Hillcrest Library on Saturday, February 24, with their placards, residents said they were taking a step to end the service delivery issues in the area.

This comes after the residents in the Hillcrest area and surroundings have been without water for most days of the week.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, one of the meeting organisers said that one of their aims is to mobilise the community with the goal of creating one voice.

“This all stems from the time we were without water. We were tired of always complaining in the groups and just talking about it, so we decided to meet and do something about it.

“The water issue has been bad. We can comfortably say we go without water and electricity for two to three days a week,” said Grant Rowley.

Rowley said the main aim of the meeting was to identify people in the community who want to serve in this regard.

“We need to identify five to six people who are willing to give part of their lives in service of others. We have nothing until we have people – willing, qualified and able people. Though we are still far from this goal, it is where we are headed,” he said.

Oliver said the group of ratepayers they are trying to mobilise will deal with other issues.

“We have the issue of work being subcontracted to outside contractors. People register newly formed companies. Municipal workers do not have working equipment and therefore cannot properly do their job,” he said.

The municipality was not available for comment by the time this article was published.
