Rev up for wheelchair challenge

Pinetown company SBS Tanks invites the public to a wheelchair-challenge fundraising initiative.

THE company, SBS Tanks, is revving up for the 2024 SBS Wheelchair Challenge which is set to take place on Friday, March 15.

This year, SBS Tanks, a company in Pinetown, aims to surpass last year’s remarkable R366 000 in funds raised.

The challenge is an annual event that sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with limited mobility while encouraging businesses to join in hosting similar initiatives.

The initiative was sparked in 2021 when SBS CEO Delayne Gray participated in the Little Eden Society Annual CEO Wheelchair Challenge. The event has since evolved into an annual fixture, with last year’s funds benefiting organisations such as Little Eden Society, Made for More, Aunty Hanneli’s Helping Hands (AHHH) and more.

Contributions were utilised to provide wheelchairs and adaptive sports equipment, benefiting individuals and groups like the eThekwini Spears wheelchair-basketball players.

“What was initially the SBS CEO spending 14 hours in a wheelchair in March 2021 turned into something incredible, both in 2021 when we were coming out of Covid lockdowns, 2022 when we were trying to recover from the riots and looting, and 2023 during a challenging year for many businesses,” said Gray.

This year, SBS Tanks extends an invitation to clients, suppliers and businesses at large, challenging them to host their own events or spend a day in a wheelchair during their work day.

“The objective is to build on the success of the event and raise more funds to support the cause. With a section of the Pinetown production facility cleared to create a court, kitted out with nets, spectator stands and staff – suppliers, clients and other SBS supporters [will be] invited to join in the day, to spend time in a wheelchair and participate in the wheelchair-basketball matches against the pros,” said Gray.

Those interested in participating or donating can reach out to sbswc@sbstanks.co.za or contact Erika Hendrikz on 067 412 4021.
