#NSCmatricresults: Two Westville Boys’ learners among the top in the country

Jaskaran Rajaruthnam and James Dent were awarded by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, for their outstanding achievements.

TWO Westville Boys’ High School learners from the Matric Class of 2023 were among the special guests alongside other top achieving students from around the country as well as the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga.

James Dent, the 2023 Head Boy achieved third place in the country for mathematics, while the Dux of 2023, Jaskaran Rajaruthnam, placed third in the country in the quintile 5 category.

“We are unbelievably proud of James and Jaskaran who attended this big ceremony with several national dignitaries to celebrate and honour their incredible achievements. What an outstanding performance, gents! Fly the Westville flag high!” wrote the school on its Facebook page.

Jaskaran said he always tries to be one step ahead. Before the [matric] year commenced, he said he’d started reading some books and notes.

“During the year, I would use a few hours in the early morning to study.”

He advised learners to not go to bed too late.

“You need yourself, and that is one thing that people tend to forget,” he said.

The overall Matric Class of 2023 have achieved a pass rate of 82.9% – the highest pass rate in the history of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. More than 890 000 full-time and part-time candidates sat for the matric exams administered by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) at the end of 2023.

KwaZulu-Natal clinched second spot, with 86.36% – up from 83.0% in 2022.
