Varsity College students donate sanitary products to Clermont school

A Varsity College initiative saw Christianenburg Primary School receive sanitary products.

CHRISTIANENBURG Primary School in Clermont recently received 457 packs of sanitary products. Made available for female learners, the sanitary products were collected during two of The IIE’s Varsity College Westville on-campus initiatives.

One of the initiatives, Ladies to Legends, an annual women’s empowerment event for students, required students to donate a pack of sanitary towels as their entry fee to the event. The event targeted 50 students, and 137 packs of sanitary products were collected.

As awareness of the Ladies to Legends event spread throughout the campus, it stirred Jonathan Kwanini’s interest. Jonathan Kwanini is a third-year student at Varsity College, Westville Campus, who took this initiative beyond the campus. He collected 320 packs of sanitary products from friends, family and his community.

“I have always been inspired by my family who have been a part of initiatives like the sanitary drive, and hearing about the Ladies to Legends event was my sign to mirror the grassroots of my family. I wouldn’t have been able to collect as many sanitary products as I have without the help from my peers at the Westwood Lodge where I live. I have had a passion for helping from the beginning,” he said.

Commending the effort, Christianenburg Primary School head of Foundation Phase, Mocky Madlala, said the impact of the sanitary product drive goes beyond the donation as it helps keep a girl in school.
“A young girl should never miss out on school because she does not have access to sanitary products or knowledge on female hygiene and her menstrual cycle,” she said.
