Support book drive and open doors for brighter futures

The goal of the book drive is to instil the love for reading and learning at a young age.

IN light of shocking statistics that indicate that 42% of South African households do not possess a single book, the Hammarsdale Cato Ridge Development Association (HCRDA) is spearheading the Book Drive, with support from OneSpace.

The HCRDA is made up of 67 companies that operate in the Outer West. Formed in 2021, it aims to make the region a better place to invest, work and live in, thereby supporting growth, employment and transformation.

The association has an initiative called the Hammarsdale Cato Ridge Development Trust, a vehicle through which it conducts charitable activities.

Joshlean Chettiar, HCRDA project manager, said their goal is to provide young adult books in English and IsiZulu for 5 000 children.

The book drive is started at a perfect time as September is regarded as Literacy Month, with National Book Week in the first week of September and International Literacy Day on September 8.

The books will be distributed in schools in Hammarsdale, Cato Ridge, KwaNyuswa, KwaXimba and neighbouring townships and the valley in need.

“The Book Drive initiative will run over a 12-week period.

“Our primary goal is to enrich the lives of young minds by fostering a love for reading and learning. Once collected, these books will be thoughtfully distributed to deserving Early Childhood Development Centres and schools in the peri-urban Outer West,” she said.

In addition, Chettiar said they believe that promoting literacy and education among young people is essential for building a brighter future for the communities.

She appealed to people to help this drive be a success by donating books. People who wish to support this drive can contact Joshlean Chettiar on 079 167 9660 or email Joshlean@bridgebetterbusiness.com.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
