Man airlifted to hospital after Hammarsdale head-on collision

The man sustained critical injuries after an accident in Hammarsdale Main Road just after the N3.

A MAN, believed to be in his 60s, has been airlifted to hospital after a head-on collision between a taxi and a light motor vehicle on Hammarsdale Main Road just after the N3.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they received numerous calls for medical assistance around 07:00.

“On arrival, paramedics found chaos with the badly damaged vehicles obstructing the roadway. Paramedics assessed the scene and found both drivers injured.

“The driver of the light motor vehicle had sustained critical injuries, and while Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilise him on the scene, a decision was made to call the Netcare911 Aeromedical Helicopter to rapidly transport the man to a level 1 hospital in Pietermaritzburg,” he said.

The roadway was closed while the helicopter landed.

“The patient was placed on a ventilator before being flown to hospital,” reported Jamieson.

The cause of the accident is unknown at the moment, and the SAPS will be investigating.
