UPDATE: Support pours in for Queensburgh fire victims

People who still wish to assist can drop off the items at home or at Flame Lily Park.

COMMUNITY spirit prevailed after an unfortunate incident occurred that left eight residents displaced and one elderly woman dead.

A fire engulfed Victory Park, a retirement village in Malvern, in the early hours of Monday morning.

After the word got out for donations of food and blankets, Malvern CPF chairperson Kevin Pillay said residents started pouring in from 07:00.

A fire which broke out at an old age home in Queensburgh claimed the life of a 92-year-old woman.

“We have received so many donations in a space of hours; it is so heartwarming to see such a united community despite all the pain.”

Pillay said that although they are not certain why the fire occurred, there are reports that it was caused by a candle as there was a power outage in the area.

“The residents are still without power,” said Pillay on Monday afternoon.

The home’s chairperson, Chris Craig-Mackie, said three top units were totally destroyed while others downstairs were damaged by water.

Craig-Mackie estimated the damage to be between R2m and R4m.

“We are very saddened by the passing of our 92-year-old resident. Some of the residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.”

He said there are 50 residents residing at the home, but eight of them have been moved to safe places since their units were damaged.

“Some of them lost all their belongings, including precious items,” he said.

Craig-Mackie also echoed Pillay’s words of gratitude to everyone who came out to assist and who donated items.

“We are just overwhelmed by the support,” he said.

He conveyed condolences to the family of the resident that passed away.

Asked about safety measures at the home since it is a home for senior citizens, the chairperson said they do have regular fire drills at the home and have panic buttons all over.

“We have a fire alarm and fire marshals who also quickly responded to get our residents to safety,” he said.

People who wish to assist can contact Kevin Pillay on 083 779 0444 for any queries or drop off donations at the home situated at 42 Ridley Park Road.

Alternatively, items can be dropped off at Flame Lily Office, 256 Stella Road or contact 031 464 6421.
