Bellair SAPS arrest man for unlicensed firearm

It is believed that the firearm belonged to the suspect's late father.

BELLAIR SAPS arrested a 38-year-old man for unlawfully being in possession of a firearm and for pointing a firearm at someone.

According to Sergeant Pam Pillay, on Wednesday, June 28, a distraught 17-year-old girl, who was accompanied by her mother, reported that the suspect, who is known to her, had pointed a loaded firearm at her only because she refused to go inside his house.

Pillay said the girl claimed that this has not been the first incident as she said he had done it all in a ‘joke’.

Information was thereafter received that the suspect has been in possession of this firearm for a few years as it was an inheritance from his late father.

“The swift response by the Bellair sector team and community leaders led to the recovery of the firearm from the suspect’s residence. The firearm was found in a concealed compartment at the his premises. The suspect was arrested, and a pistol as well as live ammunition were recovered,” said Pillay.

She highlighted that firearm safety and responsibility remain a cause for concern within the communities.

“Being in unlawful possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm at a person and unnecessary discharging of a firearm are serious offences. Firearms belonging to deceased estates must be handed in for safekeeping at your local police station until all relevant documentation has been completed and licences to keep such a firearm are issued. The community is encouraged to report illegal activities to ensure a safe and secure environment for all citizens,” urged Pillay.
