Joint efforts to keep Hillcrest beautiful

More verges will be maintained in the Hillcrest area as the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association takes on more tasks to keep the area clean and neat.

THE Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association prides itself in the work that has been prevalent in the central business district of Hillcrest. The association works in maintaining the cleanliness of the area through keeping verges clean and running a recycling centre in Delamore Road.

Marge Mitchell of the organisation said the work is carried out by three of their staff members, Thokozane Khwela, Doris Mazeka and Nqobilo Mazeka. “Their tasks are labour-intensive, and the staff are on duty, in shifts, every day of the week, including weekends and public holidays. Their relationship with the public is meritorious, and there has been nothing but praise for the manner in which they conduct themselves. From time to time, there are members of the public who sadly might be discourteous,” she said.

To further their work, the organisation has partnered with a local business to help keep some verges clean.

“Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association approached Grasschopper, and Shane van Wyk from Grasschopper immediately and generously offered to beautify the verge and Loffelstein bank below McDonalds in Old Main Road,” said Mitchell.

The local business also works in maintaining the M13 off-ramp into Hillcrest – and have further adopted the verge in Old Main Road.

Mitchell said the donations from the public play a role in how the organisation carries out their work.

“The association thanks all those who subscribe annually, those who donate each month and the sponsors who donate monthly to the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association. Without your support, the association would not be able to continue. [Also thank you] to the volunteer members of the committee who thanked the staff with food, cold drinks and cake. A huge thank you also to members of the public who donated the plants,” she said.

The Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association is ecstatic about their partnership in beautifying their area and are looking forward to more businesses and members of the community joining them in keeping their area clean.
