Security company helps K9 Unit keep a watchful eye

Blue Security's charitable trust and non-profit organisation, Blue Angels, sponsored an alarm system and CCTV Kit to the Shongweni K9 Unit.

THE Shongweni SAPS K9 Unit’s plea for the sponsorship of an alarm system and CCTV Kit was answered by Blue Security’s charitable trust and non-profit organisation, Blue Angels.

Henk Van Bemmelen, Blue Angels and Blue Security chief executive officer, said the trust’s vision is to uplift and support organisations, people and communities affected by crime.

“When the Hillcrest Community Policing Forum expressed the need at the unit, Blue Angels immediately jumped to assist.

“We saw it fitting to be involved and help the K9 Unit by enabling them and the dog handlers to keep a watchful eye on the premises and, more importantly, to watch over the dogs at night and when they’re not at the property,” said Van Bemmelen.

He added that they appreciate the support the unit provides their teams on the ground, especially their Community Crime Prevention Unit – they yield many crime-combating successes through a close working partnership.

The Shongweni K9 Unit is a small SAPS Unit based in the Upper Highway area and forms part of the Hillcrest SAPS. Their work with crime prevention, particularly narcotics and tracking dogs, is crucial in creating a safer community for the Upper Highway area.

Captain Brian Khumalo, unit commander at Shongweni K9 Unit, said he was grateful to Blue Angels and Blue Security for the support.

“We can now keep a watchful eye on the dogs when we are not at the unit. It is a great help, and we truly appreciate Blue and the CPF’s support as it provides me with peace of mind knowing I can check on the dogs from my cellphone when I’m at home, with the smart technology,” he said.

Van Bemmelen added, “We believe that security, and our various efforts to support communities, and our SAPS partners go hand in hand. Our social-responsibility commitments and partnerships are another way we serve our communities. We want to thank all our customers and clients who support the Blue Angels’ cause and make it possible for us to assist communities and partners in need.”
