Proud tradition walks tall

The Thomas More College community revived their traditional Long Walk after two years.

THOMAS More College was happy to hold their 58th 80km Long Walk after two years.

As part of the school’s cherished tradition, the annual event was disrupted by Covid in 2020 and made its return this year. The walk is coordinated by the Past Pupils’ Association, and according to the school, the Long Walk has taken place every year since 1963.

“For each and every child, the walk is an opportunity to develop perseverance and grit and to stretch each child to rise to life’s challenges. The walk is not a profit-making event but rather a spirit-building initiative.”

Starting their journey at 01:00 in Winston Park and finishing at Thomas More College, the walkers were proudly welcomed at the finishing line.

“It was an emotional moment to witness the walkers as they made their way to the finish line, having persevered for 17.5 hours on the road to complete the challenging 80km race. Throughout the day, the walkers were cheered and encouraged,” said the school.

The event also allows the junior primary pupils (grades 1–3) to participate and enjoy the excitement by completing a 5km/10km walk. The senior primary pupils (grades 4–7) took the 25km in their stride, and all finished with smiles.

The school extended their appreciation to the Long Walk Committee who ensured refreshments were provided along the route for the walkers and marshals. “We would also like to express our gratitude to the Winston Park and Kloof communities for their support and generosity and for helping us keep the spirit of the tradition alive. The day was an enormous success and a result of the combined efforts of all involved,” they said.
