Locks of hair offer strands of hope

St Benedict School learner donates 43cm of her hair to help someone in their fight against cancer.

CELEBRATING its 20th anniversary, Shavathon is one of the highlights on the CANSA calendar, bringing families, friends and colleagues together in solidarity with cancer survivors.

With the fundraising event taking place up until March 31, at workplaces, businesses, clubs, organisations and schools, Lia Govender, a Grade Seven learner at St Benedict School, donated 43cm of her hair at Pavilion Shopping Mall.

Lia said it was not an easy decision to make as she has had long hair since Grade RR.

“I feel that a woman’s hair is closely linked to her dignity and pride, and that, by donating my hair, I can help someone in their fight against cancer,” she said.

Lia’s mom, Katy, said the school has played a big part in the values which are instilled in her children.

“I would like to urge other parents, schools and children to promote the same. We have the ability to help many people fighting this dreadful illness,” said the proud mother.
