Country needs a blood-supply boost
The SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days for each blood group to ensure sustained blood availability for patients in need.
THE critically low blood supply in the country has left the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) urging donors, old and new, to come forward and donate blood.

Currently, the country is sitting at 2.8 days type O blood which is used in emergencies as it’s suitable for all blood groups to receive. This according to SANBS, is critical.
“We are experiencing a high demand for blood from hospitals across the country. The nation’s blood stocks are strained, necessitating our appeal for increased donations in aid of those who may need transfusions during this period,” says Thandi Mosupye, SANBS senior manager: Marketing, Communication and Brand.
Blood stocks have lingered below three days over a prolonged period.
When the Northglen News visited SANBS in Durban North branch on Thursday, levels were at 1.3 days.
Dennis Ngongoma, public relations practitioner for the Durban North branch, said the shortage is a concern as it’s been ongoing for a prolonged time.

“We are appealing to donors to go to the nearest blood bank or drive and donate blood. We are currently experiencing severe blood shortage in KZN. As a result, we are unable to provide
hospitals with enough blood supply,” he said.
If you belong to group O blood type, you are urged to donate. This type of blood is considered the universal blood group because anyone – regardless of blood type – can receive it without risking a transfusion reaction.
