WATCH: Monday will be a normal day in Mariannhill – vows various stakeholders

The Mariannhill community has been assured that police are on high alert and will be out in numbers.

VARIOUS stakeholders which included the taxi association, safer cities, ward councillor, Mariannhill CPF and police have assured residents that they will be out in numbers to ensure that there are no disruptions in the Mariannhill area on Monday.

This is after reports of a possible shutdown which has been called for by the political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who are demanding an end to load-shedding and the resignation of president Cyril Ramaphosa.

During a press briefing on Thursday, March 16, the community leaders said the Mariannhill area is already affected by too many problems and they will not allow such a disruption.

ANC regional executive member Sifiso Mkhize said on Wednesday they held a meeting and a decision was made that businesses will be open as usual and there will be transport for commuters,

“Monday will be a normal day. People and businesses will be protected by police and security personnel. We are not against people marching as it is everyone’s right but no one has a right to make a decision to shut down the country,” he said.

Mariannhill CPF chairman Dawood Chirwa also echoed Mkhize’s words and assured the public that police will be out in numbers.

“If anyone sees any suspicious activities they should alert the police. We have already started to monitor the area and we shall continue to do so.

“Businesses are still trying to get back to normal after the looting and we will not allow anyone to take us back to that terrible ordeal,” he said.
