Love quarrel turns to shots fired

The victim was thankful for the police's swift response and says she lives in constant fear of her violent boyfriend as she believes he might come back.

A 30-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by Bellair SAPS for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, discharging a firearm in a residential area, and furnishing false personal information earlier this month.

Bellair SAPS communications officer Sergeant Pam Pillay said the man’s girlfriend was at home when he arrived and demanded she open the door to allow him in.

“When she refused him entry because of their arguments on the phone earlier that day, the accused began firing shots while on the premises.”

SAPS Bellair was notified, and after a swift response from Bellair’s sector team Warrant Officer Seelan Koopersamy and Constable Mlonzi, Community Service Centre personnel Constable Mthimkulu and Constable Mornè Neethling, he was arrested, and a pistol with the serial number filed off was recovered at the scene. Upon further investigation, it was established the suspect had furnished false personal information upon detention.

He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s court on Monday, February 6, and the case was remanded until further notice.

“The victim, who wished not to be named, lives in fear for her life as she believes her violent boyfriend might return to her residence. She was, however, thankful to the police for responding to her complaint immediately, and she was unharmed,” said Pillay.

Bellair SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Braveman Dladla strongly condemns gender-based violence in any form. “Illegal firearms are a concern and must be taken off our streets. Members are commended for their quick response to complaints of this nature, and their efforts are appreciated,” he said.

In a separate incident, Bellair SAPS conducted an operation in partnership with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) on Friday, February 10.

“The operation was to focus on the non-compliance by security officials and companies in terms of the PSIRA regulations. Eight arrests were effected for contravention of the PSIRA act, and warnings and notices were issued to businesses who employed staff not registered with PSIRA,” said Pillay.
