Guard shot dead in New Germany cash-in-transit heist

Police reported that eight suspects fled with R930K cash.

A SECURITY guard was shot dead in New Germany on Monday afternoon, February 20, during a cash-in-transit heist.

Pinetown Cluster communications officer Captain Bongumusa Manqele said an armoured vehicle went to pick up cash at a liquor store in Qashana Khuzwayo Road (Shepstone Road).

“The driver remained in the vehicle, and one guard went inside to collect the cash. When the guard exited the shop, he was held up by a suspect who pointed a gun at his head and disarmed him.

“The suspects then drove their white Toyota Fortuner into the security vehicle, preventing him from moving. Another suspect then opened the rear left door of the security vehicle and shot the driver dead.

“The suspects then took the cash boxes from the security vehicle and drove off in a Toyota LDV and Golf with unknown registrations,” said Manqele.

He said information received revealed that there were about eight suspects armed with rifles and handguns.

“An amount of R930 000 cash was taken.”

The other guard sustained minor injuries to his leg.

“A rifle was also taken from the deceased,” said Manqele.

No one has been arrested yet.
