Suspect nabbed for extortion

A suspect was arrested at Westmead while allegedly attempting to extort a business.

A SUSPECT charged with extortion is set to appear at the Pinetown Magistrate’s court on Monday, February 6. The Pinetown police reported that they arrested a 38-year-old suspect after he allegedly attempted to extort a business in Westmead using the Department of Labour’s name. 

“Police received intelligence about a man who was going to come and collect the balance of the money from the company. It is alleged that last month, the suspect went to a company on Hillclimb Road in Westmead and told the management that he is an official from the Department of Labour and was sent to conduct an inspection.”

“After conducting an inspection, he complained about the bad working environment and demanded the company give him R20 000. An initial payment of R10 000 was given to him, and when he came to collect the balance yesterday, he was apprehended by undercover police officers who were already on the company premises.”

The suspect is also being sought for other crimes he allegedly committed in the eThekwini District.
