Pinetown roads are in a sad state

A resident has appealed to the authorities to take responsibility and fix the number of infrastructure challenges facing the Pinetown community.

A PINETOWN resident, Lynne Cunningham, is disgusted by the state of the roads in Pinetown.

“If it is not potholes, it is the uncovered manholes or litter strewn all over. What do we pay rates for?” asked the irate resident.

Cunningham, who has resided in the Manors area for more than 20 years, said she was shocked at how the place has gone down.

“Every morning, I take a walk, and what I witness on the roads is just a disgrace. It is shocking. I am beyond words – imagine if you were not aware of the area and you were walking and you fell into this uncovered manhole,” she said, referring to a manhole in Glenugie Road which she said has been uncovered for weeks.

“It is so sad that a town that used to be so clean and tidy has turned into a joke. People are so derogatory when talking about Pinetown, but who can blame them?”

She said she was worried about the number of potholes on the roads. “Everywhere there are potholes. What happens to your car if you hit them?” asked Cunningham.

The resident pleaded with the community to come together and fight this instead of complaining all the time.

“This is our town; we need to fix it. We cannot leave our houses and reside elsewhere – we love our homes – and I truly believe that if we are united, we can change a lot of things,” said a concerned Cunningham.

Gigantic pothole on Bamboo Lane

Last week, community activist Andreas Mathios reported live from a huge pothole in Bamboo Lane.

“It was a hazard for motorists – getting inside the pothole was the last resort to have it fixed after it was reported numerous times. I believe that helped as it was fixed immediately after posting up that video,” he said.

The resident said the pothole was a concern, especially with the schools that have opened. “We have a primary school and a college on this road.

“It is also a residential area, and this hole is causing unnecessary inconvenience for many people,” he said.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said potholes are attended to as and when they are reported. “The public is urged to report them.”
