Reviving the majorette sports in KZN

The Eagles Majorette club is calling on Highway ladies to join their family.

PINETOWN resident has embarked on a journey to revive majorette’s club by forming one in her area. Elmarie Samuel said the love she has for the sport will not allow her to watch and standby as the sport becomes extinct in the province.

“I’ve been passionate about the sport of majorettes (drummies) since I was a little girl and when I got involved in training again during 2020, I was sad to see how few teams were left in KZN. In November 2022, I decided to start my own team and started up a High School team in the Upper Highway area where there is currently no other drummie team,” said Samuel.

She said they currently have seven athletes in each team.

“The Junior team caters for girls from grade one to seven. The senior team consists of girls from grade eight to twelve. We also have a ladies’ team for anyone aged 19 over and our average age is currently around 40. We are thrilled that older ladies are still passionate about getting involved in the sport or about returning to the sport that they once loved,” she said.

The eagles are an independent team that is open to anyone from the Highway area. Samuel said the homeschooling communities have grown during COVID, however, unfortunately these kids are often not able to take part in extra murals that are only offered at schools.

The team is set to compete for the first time in March 2022, the competition will also determine if the team will participate at the SA Championships which is being held in Durban in July 2023

The community is welcome to contact Samuel on 0716420792 or email eagles.majorette.club@gmail.com.

“They can also contact our social media pages on Facebook and Instagram. Juniors practice from 4 to 5pm on Tuesdays at Ashley Sports Clubs and the Ladies team practices on the same day at the same venue from 5:30 to 6:30pm.  The Seniors (high school team) practices from 3:30 to 5:30pm on Fridays and every second Saturday at Forest View Primary School in Waterfall,” she said.

The club fee is R150 per month for the Junior and Ladies teams and R250 per month for the Seniors.
