Love and loyalty has kept the Armstrongs married for 60 years

Westville couple share with us their celebration of their 60 year marriage.

IT is a season of celebration for the Armstrong family in Westville as they celebrated their birthdays and 60th wedding anniversary. Basil and Nicky will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on January 12, along with Nicky’s birthday, and Basil celebrated his birthday on January 10.

The couple met when they were on an international trip in London. “We were on a train in London to West Kensington, and we sat opposite each other. I remember he was wearing a rugby club blazer. We started chatting, and that’s how we fell in love,” said Nicky.

The couple said they spent just over a year before they went back to South Africa, where they got officially engaged and married. “I proposed to my wife while we were still in London. The engagement was not official as I had not bought the ring because it was expensive. I told her we could use the money for the shows,” said Basil.

The couple said they got married in an Anglican church in Camps Bay, Western Cape. The couple has four children, including their son-in-law and two grandchildren.

“In the years we have spent together, we have shared many beautiful memories. We have been to different countries. We have been to Los Angeles; we have also visited Hollywood and their movie studios; we have been across Europe and shared a lot of beautiful memories,” said the couple.
