Fabulous reads: Conservation book set to inspire young minds

A book review on The Rumbling Rhino.

The Rumbling Rhino, Roslynne Toerien, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781776357697

ABSOLUTELY beautiful images compliment this book’s simple yet powerful message on rhino conservation.

The aim of the book is two-fold: to create awareness on endangered animals and to inspire little minds to get involved in conservation efforts.

The book does take a bit of a dark turn by shedding some light on the dangers South Africa’s dwindling rhino population face on a daily basis – the greed of poachers.

The author takes her time to emphasise to the reader that no matter their age or size, children are not powerless in the fight to protect our rhinos.

The story has some rhyming, which I felt fell flat at times. However, this is a children’s book after all.

The book also contains several pages that present some bonus facts on these iconic and beloved creatures. Do you know what a group of rhinos are called? Because I didn’t.

The illustrations are, without a doubt, breathtaking, and are guaranteed to mesmerise your little one(s). I especially love that the author partnered with the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary and pledged to donate a portion of the book sales to the organisation. This shows her walking the talk, and setting an example to the young minds she is hoping to inspire. – Mariclair Smit 4/5 stars
