Celebrating women in law

The Women in Law South Africa (WOZA) awards chose the Best Woman Top Achiever for 2022. Tatyana Vasilyeva shares more about her award.

TATYANA Vasilyeva of Varsity College in Westville is an inspiration to aspiring women in law as she has been awarded the Best Woman Student Top Achiever Award at the recent Women in Law South Africa (WOZA) event.

Woza recognises women lawyers for their outstanding dedication, achievements and contribution to the profession. These women are recognised in their services, legal education, human rights or the pro bono sectors. This year’s awards theme was to celebrate the success of women in law and was also to close the gender gap to create greater gender parity and recognition.

Vasilyeva is a final-year student in Varsity College who has achieved distinctions in all her modules and an overall average of 91% for the first three years of her course.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, the 22-year-old said that from a young age, she has always known that she will end up in the law profession. “I chose law because it is one of the professions aimed at helping people; I love helping people so law made sense to me,” she said.

She further expressed her gratitude at seeing her hard work pay off. “After putting in so much hard work into my studies the past three years, it was an incredible honour to have my efforts acknowledged at such a prestigious event, attended by esteemed women who have soared in their careers all over the continent.

“Not only did it motivate me to finish my final year of studies stronger than ever, but it also inspired me to strive to become a successful woman who will make great contributions to and changes in the legal field in the future,” she said.

Carey Robertson, programme manager of Bachelor of Laws in Varsity College, Westville, said it is a privilege lecturing Vasilyeva.

“She is an exceptional student with great attention to detail, a keen mind and a profound understanding of difficult legal concepts that set her apart from her peers. Her communication skills are remarkable, particularly in her written work, where she is meticulous in her referencing and is very skilled in the art of a well-reasoned legal argument.”

Tatyana said she has not decided yet where she wants to specialise in as anything in the law profession ignites her passion.
