Recently, TikTok blew up with videos of social media influencers, including chefs, making their own butter. Soon after, followed cream cheese. One social media influencer said it cost him R32 to make 820g of cream cheese, something one would have to fork out R45 to R50 in a store for just 240g.

Here are the recipes with links to the videos should you wish to give them a try.

Butter:
Whip 500g of double cream until it forms a butter.
Drain into a sieve over a bowl and pour cold water over the butter.
Then wash and squeeze it together until the water runs clear.
Add salt for salted butter and shape to resemble a brick.

Cream cheese:
Place a strainer over a bowl and then place a clean dishcloth over the strainer.
Pour 2kg full-cream amasi over the dishcloth.
Place in the fridge for 24 hours until the amasi thickens to form a cream cheese.
Scrape the cream cheese off the dishcloth and add salt if needed.
