Frazer said they were shocked by the testimonies they heard from the learners.

The MEC of the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mbali Frazer, said they will be embarking on a commission of enquiry to look into the racial allegations at Hillcrest High School.

This was declared during the MEC’s visit to the school on Thursday in response to the reports that alleged that learners in the school were calling each other the N-word in a WhatsApp group last year. The learners in the school alleged that the matter was swept under the carpet.

Frazer said they had met with the learners and parents to hear their complaints regarding the matter.

“Our meeting was initially for stakeholders only, but when we saw they were here, we had to give them an audience. Unfortunately, after listening to them, it changed the purpose of our visit,” she said.

Frazer said they were shocked by the testimonies they heard from the learners. “The pupils are hurt and disappointed. The commission will be dealing with these matters; I do not want to pre-empt what they will be coming back with.

“We are now going to commission an inquiry where we will be dealing with all the matters relayed to us by the learners,” she said.

Frazer said they will be waiting on the commission for this matter.
