Parents’ Talk for families of LGBTQI+ youth

The event will cover topics such as understanding LGBTQI+ youth, challenging misconceptions and stereotyping, and a Q and A session for parents will be offered.

“[Coming out] can be a challenging time for parent and child, so it is important to be well-informed and to offer unconditional love to the child. We cut through misconceptions and provide reliable information for LGBTQI+ youth and their families. It’s our job as parents to support our children so that they can thrive and realise their full potential, and be the best that they can be,” says Kim Lithgow, CEO of Same Love Toti, which is a non-profit providing support to LGBTQI+ youth and their families.

Woza Moya’s visual artist honoured for the month of August – Andile Maphumulo: Objects of Home

Artist Andile Maphumulo unpacks objects which define the notion of home in his painting on display at Woza Moya in Hillcrest.

Each month, a different artist paints a wall panel which is displayed outside the Woza Moya, Hillcrest AIDS Centre shop. The NPO further assists each artist by marketing their work for the entire month – by making and selling a greeting card of the painted wall panel, so artists can earn an ongoing passive income. The painting itself is for sale, and people are invited to bid for the painting, starting from R1 500 at the beginning of the month.

Andile Maphumulo is a contemporary artist and member of the Amasosha Art Movement. His work is inspired by the arrangement of objects inside the rooms of black communities in the post-apartheid era. His chosen image is titled Usolwazi. It is mixed media and 186cm x 123cm in size.

While you are there, enjoy a cup of delicious coffee and wander around the well-stocked nursery.

Date: the month of August, weekdays from 08:00 to 16:00, Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00.
