Shongweni couple lose home and possessions in fire

Well-known artist and wife are unhurt after fire destroys their home in Shongweni.

RENOWNED potter Andrew Walford’s Shongweni property burned down on Monday, July 11.

Walford and his wife Leanda have lost their home and possessions and their cars were damaged.

Leanda Walford said that the cause of the fire is presently unknown and that they had a brief time to exit the building safely. Neighbours assisted them to push their cars out of the path of the fire.

Walford is a well-known ceramic artist who works in the Japanese style and who has exhibited widely internationally. He held regular open days on his property in Shongweni.

Upper Highway residents can donate kitchen items, linen and clothing at drop-off points in Hillcrest. The Walford’s relatives are currently setting up a Go Fund Me page for the couple.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
