UKZN optometry students need your help

The equipment required by optometry students is unfortunately not covered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal is on a mission to assist the optometry students who say they cannot afford some of the expensive equipment required by the faculty.

In a statement, the university said they had embarked on a fundraising initiative between the Westville Campus Students’ Representative Council and the College of Health Sciences, who together are calling for KwaZulu-Natal stakeholders, donors, businesses and NGOs to respond.

“The university trains optometric practitioners who cater to our country’s visual welfare through the prescription of suitable eye exercises, spectacles and contact lenses. Students who choose to become researchers are responsible for developments in the science, both in South Africa and beyond our borders. The students’ comprehensive clinical training requires the purchase of their own optometric equipment, which is expensive and not covered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme,” read the statement.

Donors are encouraged to make a contribution to the education of an optometrist by sponsoring optometric equipment. All donations which meet specified criteria will qualify for a tax benefit, namely a section 18A certificate.

To donate, contact the Discipline’s academic leader, Dr Naimah Ebrahim, on ebrahimn@ukzn.ac.za.
