Collapsed road leads to closure of Shongweni market

The market and other businesses in the Shongweni Valley were affected by the road which collapsed after last week's floods.

THE popular Shongweni Farmers and Crafters Market which attracts hundreds of people every Saturday morning is currently closed until further notice.

The road leading to the market collapsed following last week’s heavy rains.

The market was established by the Standeaven family in 1998 as they dreamed of starting a weekly farmers market to help local farmers move surplus stock.

Christine Standeaven said the main road has a gapping hole and the rest of the road has slipped quite a lot.

“We and the residents from the Shongweni Valley have been in consultation with the necessary government departments about a way forward with the repairs .

According to Standeaven, the closure of the market has affected about 230 informal traders.

“We have about 230 informal traders affected at our market, plus the Shongweni Valley has numerous businesses that are also affected. This means no work for anyone, this is disastrous from all sides,” she said.

She added that they are waiting on government officials to inform them when repairs would start.
