Hillcrest resident fears for her family’s life in Ukraine

Katya Fedkina says she has not spoken to her father who lives in the city of Kherson, in the south of Ukraine, for two-days due to the ongoing conflict.

A UKRAINIAN woman living in Hillcrest says she fears for her family and the civilians in her country due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Katya Fedikina, who has been living in South Africa since 1997, says her father and stepmother are unable to flee the country and are currently living in a bomb shelter in the South of Ukraine.

Fortunately, her step-sister was able to flee the country and is currently living in Europe as a refugee.

What the Russian army is doing in Ukraine is unacceptable and should not be happening in 2022.”

According to the United Nations, more than two million people have fled their homes since the Russian invasion which led to the death of thousands of civilians.

“I don’t understand the reason behind this war. What hurts me the most is that innocent civilians have lost their lives for serving their country.”

Fedikina says that Russians are being indoctrinated by President Vladimir Putin through social media and various broadcasts services to believe that Ukrainians are killing their own people.

I have eyewitnesses such as my family there who can justify that Ukrainians are being killed by the Russian army.”
