Pinetown street vendors fed-up with sewage stench

The concerned vendors told the Highway Mail that the sewage has been running down Crompton Street for the past two months.

THE foul odour permeating the intersection of Crompton Street and Park Lane in Pinetown due to a sewage overflow has resulted in businesses in the precinct losing customers.

One of the vendors who sells fruits and flowers at the intersection, Mike Taylor said he was also concerned about the possible health implications of this spill.

“This has been going on for two months and on other days, the smell gets worse. Then there are the cars that drive through it and splash it up the sidewalk,” he said.

According to Taylor, the situation is at its worst in the mornings and afternoons as the intersection is filled with raw faeces.

“We believe that it is coming from one of the flats and we have been told by the municipality they are not responsible for fixing it. A few days ago, plumbers did come through to wash the sewerage away, we appreciate that but the thing is, it does not solve the problem, it just takes away the smell,” he said.

Taylor said a health inspector needs to do a site visit as it is just so bad and he believes it must be bad for one’s health to have all this sewage running down the road.” he said.

“We make a living by selling here and this sight and smell is chasing away our customers,” said the concerned Taylor.

He added that they have tried to get to the bottom of this and reaching out to the Highway Mail is their last resort.

“We experienced the same problem about six years ago and it was sorted after it was published in the paper,” said a desperate Taylor.

Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth, said she has noted the problem and will be working with the relevant officials to find the solution.
