Malvern SAPS secure arrests and convictions

One suspect appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate's Court and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm. 

MEMBERS of Malvern SAPS have been hard at work to put criminals behind bars. The long arm of the law resulted in the arrest of two suspects for different crimes. The first suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in 2018.

“Constable Lavern Gounden together with his crew spotted the vehicle in Northdene. The vehicle was stationary but when the suspect saw the police he drove off at high speed. Then the police gave chase. Radio control was contacted for backup, Pinetown SAPS and the K9 unit assisted,” said communications officer of Malvern SAPS, Sergeant Sthembile Kheswa.

According to Kheswa, the 32-year-old suspect was apprehended on Rushbrook Road, Sarnia. “Upon questioning him about the firearm, he stated that he threw the firearm on the M7 freeway. He was searched by the police, a black Carl Walther firearm and ammunition was found hidden in a compartment under the left front seat,” said Kheswa.

The suspect appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on Wednesday, February 2.

Meanwhile, another suspect was arrested for a stabbing that occurred at the Burlington informal settlement on Sunday, May 23 2021.
Warrant officer, Basil Munsamy with his team attended the scene and found a 37-year-old woman lying on the road outside Burlington Clinic.

“The deceased had three stab wounds on her upper body. A government ambulance and certified her death. The next of kin arrived at the scene and identify as her brother. The body was taken to Pinetown Mortuary,” said Kheswa.

The next day the community brought the suspect to Malvern SAPS. Warrant officer, Hemant Raghoonundan questioned the suspect. The suspect was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment recently.

“Working hand in hand with the community makes the work much easier. Job well done to detective warrant officer, Gounden and thank you for your commitment and dedication towards your work,” she added.
