Residents urged to participate in the upcoming ward committee elections

The municipality’s 111 wards will each hold its own elections for a new ward committee on Sundays, March 13 and 20.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has encouraged residents to participate in electing new ward committee members in the upcoming elections.

Councillor Thabani Nyawose, eThekwini speaker said ward committees are instrumental to achieve the objectives of local government.

“Ward committees are an important communication link between residents, ward councillors and the municipality. They play an advisory role that can make recommendations to Council,” said Nyawose.

The municipality’s 111 wards will each hold its elections for a new ward committee on Sundays, March 13 and 20 March.

The committee is made up of the councillor as the chairperson and ten nominated members of the community. “They serve as an advisory body without any executive powers. It is an independent representative structure that functions impartially,” said Nyawose.

The following portfolios shall be reflected in ward committees: Cleansing and Solid Waste; Electricity; Water and Sanitation; Entrepreneurship and Small Business; Health, Safety and Security; Human Settlement; Skills Development and Job Creation; Sports, Recreation and Culture; Transport; Roads and Stormwater; Youth and Gender and Vulnerable Group.
