KHBA recycling centre used as dumping site

'We appeal and beg, once again, to the public to not bring rubbish to the recycling centre,' -KHBA's chairperson, Marge Mitchell.

THE Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association’s (KHBA) recycling centre, a space that is meant to reduce litter and to promote a sustainable planet, has sadly been reduced to a ‘dumping site’ by residents who continue to drop off rubbish and non-recyclable material.

The centre, situated in Hillcrest on Delamore Road next to the Sizakala Centre and the Hillcrest Library, was established in 2008 and is a collection point from which recyclers collect the material used for recycling.

The KHBA is a voluntary association that aims to promote a cleaner and more beautiful environment within Hillcrest. According to KHBA’s chairperson, Marge Mitchell, on a regular basis people have used the site as their personal dumping ground.

“There are numerous signs stating ‘this is not a rubbish dump’ but the abuse continues,” she said.

Mitchell has personally taken video evidence from the CCTV cameras at the site to the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court, seeking action against illegal dumping offenders but, unfortunately, it yielded no results.

“We appeal and beg, once again, to the public to not bring rubbish to the recycling centre,” she urged.

The centre does not collect plastic, electronics, fluorescent light tubes and batteries.

Residents can, however, drop off paper and cardboard, polystyrene (from large appliances), cans and tins, glass bottles and glass jars for recycling.

KHBA recycling centre opening times:
Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 16:00 (closed 12:00-13:00)
Saturday: 08:30 to 12:30
Sunday and public holidays: 11:30 to 15:30
