Cowies Hill school turns 50

Over the years, Cowies Hill Pre-Primary School has grown from 35 learners and now has six groups with 110 children.

COWIES Hill Pre-Primary School hosted a special party at school on Wednesday, November 10 to celebrate the school’s 50th birthday.

The day was filled with lots of fun as learners danced, sang a happy birthday and enjoyed sweet treats.

Speaking about the formation of the school, current principal, Vashti Scrooby said a resident, Shirley Worsfold started a school in her home in Ernest Whitcutt Road called ‘Little Bo-Peep’ in 1961 and when that school closed, Worsfold and other parents re-opened Cowies Hill Nursery School at 19 Alida Place in 1971 with 35 learners.

“Each family supported the school by giving a R100 loan deposit to re-start the school. Worsfold remained the principal for 12 years. In 1978, the name of the school changed from Cowies Hill Nursery School Association to The Cowies Hill Pre-Primary School Association. Over the years, more classes were added and now we have six groups with 110 learners,” said Scrooby.

As part of celebrations for this milestone, the school also hosted its our annual golf day on October 22 at Kloof Country Club,.

“It was a successful day as we were joined by enthusiastic golfers of which others having been playing in our golf day for 20 years,” she said.

The next function the school hosted was a celebration of the present and past staff and parents with a high tea held on October 24 at the warm school with a vibrant environment

Former principals, Cecily Fraser and Maryke Crossman were present to enjoy the afternoon and shared some good old memories

Scrooby added that she was proud to be part of this milestone and added that as a private, Christian school their aim is to develop pre-school children into well-rounded, confident individuals, taking special care of their physical, intellectual and spiritual needs.

“Together with our loving and caring staff, we will continue to give this excellent education for many years to come,” she said.
