Hillcrest learners support Poppy Day

Poppy Day, which is also known as Remembrance Day, is held annually on November 11 to commemorate the signing of Armistice between Germany and the Allied forces of the first World War.

HILLCREST High School’s student leadership team members helped to raise funds for the South African military veterans recently.

The learners sold red poppies at some local shopping centres.

This took place on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The wearing of red poppies signifies the poppy plants that grew in between the trench lines and no man’s land on the Western Front.

The red poppy is a symbol of hope and remembrance – when we wear it, we celebrate not only the brave men that fought on the front line but every person who gave their lives for their country.

“The symbol of hope is particularly poignant in our current mercurial times and we thank and remember all those whose example of sacrificial love goes before us,” said school’s marketing and PR manager, Nicky Kidgell.

The Poppy Day event was organised by SA Legion and MOTH – Highway Shellhole.
