Tour Durban MTB races enter refinement stages

Based on the interest generated at the launch, trail builders have fine-tuned the routes for the 40km and 20km rides.

MOUNTAIN bikers in KwaZulu-Natal can look forward to the long-awaited debut of the aQuellé Tour Durban MTB races on Saturday, November 27.

Cyclists have had to wait 19 months to ride the races on the Ethekwini Mount Bike Association (EMBA) trials north of Cornubia Mall.

The inaugural ride was cancelled in April last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It offers riders a choice between a 20km and 40km event.

The chairperson of EMBA, Noel Baker said the core routes remain unchanged but some key changes have been made, particularly on the return legs.

“The original route finished with quite a hard climb up to the start/finish venue, so we have reversed that portion of both routes. That way, the final section is on an easier section to ride and uses a section called ‘Sugarcane Road’ to get you back to the finish, where there is plenty of room to pass slower riders,” said Baker.

With a significant number of road riders entering the MTB races the day before the M4 road races, Baker said the trail plan sets out to offer fun, manageable MTB trails.
