Assagay roadworks frustrate, raise safety concerns
Assagay residents called for urgent intervention before a tragedy or injury occurs.
FOLLOWING numerous complaints from residents regarding the roadworks that are currently underway in Assagay Road, the PR councillor for ward 8 and 103, Remona Mckenzie, has stepped in and set up an urgent meeting with municipal officials to address the matter.
Mckenzie said there were no ‘stop and go’ signs for months and this has caused havoc with traffic in the area.

“I have been called to the area to address continuous, never-ending issues as residents feel the contractors are not adhering to the safety rules,” explained Mckenzie.
According to the ward councillor, new water pipelines are being installed in the area, but added that, since the installation project began, the current water pipes in the area kept bursting.
“On one occasion, heavy machinery was left in the road. Assagay Road is a small road and this was a danger to motorists. I hope that this meeting will shed some light and I will report back to the residents once I get answers,” she said.

A concerned resident, whose name is known to the Highway Mail, called for urgent intervention before a tragedy or injury occurred.
“The issue that myself and many families have is that the construction is badly done and it is a safety hazard.”
The resident said there has been no communication as to when the roadworks will be completed. “Just last week, the workers downed tools,” he said.

The complainant also highlighted the soil erosion underneath the road and, with the rainy season on the way, was scared that a car would sink into the river.
The Highway Mail sent a query to the eThekwini Municipality, but no comment was received by the time of going to print.
