Police nab Westmead armed robbers

One of the three suspects is still at large.

TWO of the three suspects were arrested shortly after they robbed a business in Westmead on Tuesday, September 21.

The eThekwini District communications commander, Capt. Carmen Rhynes, said the Pinetown Crime Prevention members were patrolling Pinetown CBD and Westmead’s hotspots when they were notified of a business robbery in Gillitts Road and that a charcoal Ford Ecosport was stolen.

According to Rhynes, a businessman was in his office when he heard a loud bang on his door.

The businessman went to inspect the cause of the noise and spotted the suspects. One of the suspects pointed a gun at the businessman before instructing him to return to building and lie on the floor. The suspects stole the businessman’s jewellery, cellphone and car keys. The suspects also took cellphones and cash from the employees at the Westmead business.

The suspects fled in the complainant’s vehicle. While en route to the scene, SAPS received information from Tracker regarding the location of the vehicle.

“They immediately proceeded towards Totter Road and came across the vehicle with three male suspects. On seeing the SAPS members, the three suspects jumped out of the stolen vehicle and ran onto the M13,” said the district communications commander.

The SAPS members gave chase and arrested two of the suspects. Upon searching the suspects, police found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, cellphones, the victim’s wallet and cash.

“The complainant’s Ford Ecosport was also recovered. The business owner and his employees later identified the arrested suspects,” added Rhynes.
