Kamberg Classic kicks off this weekend

Prepare for a nail-biting race as trail runners and riders compete in the next leg of the 2021 Quattro ROAG Series.

IT is a big weekend for mountain bikers and runners as they compete in the Kamberg Classic, the first “physical” race of the 2021 Quattro ROAG Series.

This year’s series kicked off at the Virginia Trails last month with a GPS-navigation event that catered for the social-distancing rules. Stuart Marais (Team NanoTime) narrowly edged out a young Michael Foster by just seven seconds, while Brendan van Eeden (VNQSH) was pushed into third on the final two days of racing.

The three cyclists have entered the 60km Kamberg event on Sunday and will be joined by Tyronne White (DriveTrain Academy), who ended fifth at Virginia.

Christie Hearder (Absolute Motion) was knocked into second spot at the Virginia Trails while Rouxda Grobler (DriveTrain Academy) claimed the win. The duo will battle it out again this weekend.

The 14km trail running on Saturday will see Sarah Gray start as an overwhelming favourite. Her rivals in the competition are Hayley MacKinnon and Alison Wasserfall, although the late entries could see some new challengers emerge. The men’s trail running event is traditionally difficult to predict.

With last weekend’s snow still on some of the mountain tops, the weather is expected to be surprisingly warm. Race organisers said the conditions underfoot are reportedly perfect for riding and running.
