‘Dealing in cannabis is still illegal,’ warns SAPS

Two people were recently arrested while transporting cannabis with a street value of R3m.

THE South African Police Service (SAPS) issued a warning to residents that dealing in cannabis is still considered a criminal offence.

According to KZN SAPS spokesman, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, in terms of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act (No 140 of 199)2, SAPS is mandated to and will act, not only against businesses that sell cannabis illegally, but also against people who purchase the product.

The warning comes after two suspects were arrested and dagga, valued at R3 million, was seized by police. The truck was transporting dagga from Pongola to Vryheid/Louwsburg.

“Two suspects, aged 43 and 46, were placed under arrest for dealing in dagga,” said Mbele.
