OPINION: Where to from here?

Letter to the Editor - week ending 27 August 2021.

OVER the past decade, we have come to accept that we live in a failed state as crime and corruption become rampant and the response from the authorities becomes more and more diluted to the point of non-existence.

When you have that scenario, then criminals become emboldened, as they know that the likelihood of ever being caught and apprehended is slight.

What started out as a protest against the imprisonment of a former president soon degenerated into a frenzy of looting and destruction on an intensity only seen by sharks during a sardine run. As with our day-to-day crime, very few of the looters have been arrested and the likelihood of prosecution will be even smaller, despite a huge volume of photographic evidence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his cosy Sunday fire-side chat, confirmed he was the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and was going to deploy the army in all the hot-spots. Apparently their camouflage uniforms are so effective that they are invisible.
