Support Upper Highway NPO’s Spay Neuter Inoculate Project

Friends of K9 Trust appeal for donations for the fury friends.

FRIENDS of K9 Trust, an NPO that help dogs whose owners are unable to cover their veterinary expenses, are appealing to the public to consider supporting their initiatives.

The group of volunteers work in rural areas or valleys surrounding Upper Highway such as Shongweni, Embo, Kwangcolosi, Cliffdale, Bux Farm and Mandela Park.

This is done through their Spay Neuter Inoculate Project (SNIP).

To kickstart SNIP, which falls under the trust, funds were donated and the project focuses on sterilising dogs in order to try and slow down the increase of unwanted litters from unsterilised dogs.

Started in 2019 by Debbie Smith, the NPO has six volunteers who work in certain areas.

Volunteers identify the dogs in need, pick them up and transport them to a vet in Assagay and the dog and family receives a bag with dog treats and some essentials that the family might need to survive.

“They are sterilised, vaccinated and dewormed. After the operation, which we try and do on weekly basis depending on funds, each dog goes back with a bag with treats and educational booklet.

To date, the organisation has sterilised more than 600 dogs.

Smith said this is done to prevent unwanted puppies.

“Many people are already struggling with just one dog, and they have no means of taking care of the puppies. Once the dog has been sterilised, it becomes so much healthier.

She added that it is through the public funding that they have been able to help so many dogs.

To join the initiative, people can donate R67 or R670. They also hope to collect 67 blankets, dog bowls, 67 collars or anything small that the NPO can put into the bags.
