Security company nabs Pinetown ATM scammer

The public has been advised to be aware of bank card skimming.

AN ATM scammer was arrested in Pinetown at the weekend.

CCTV footage and surveillance from Blue Security armed response officers led to the apprehension of the suspect.

According to the company’s operations director, Brian Jackson, the officers were dispatched to assist a client after a bank card scam which was reported on Saturday morning.

During the investigation, they obtained a description of the getaway car, which they shared with all patrol vehicles in the area.

“The car was located outside a mall.  The suspects dispersed and the driver got back into their vehicle and headed towards Durban after noticing that they were being tailed.

“Thanks to the sirens of a passing ambulance, our armed response officer managed to slow down the suspicious vehicle and arrested the driver. The suspect and the vehicle were handed over to Umbilo Police Station,” said Jackson.

He advised the public to be aware of bank card skimming.

“People must check to see if the ATM keypad you are about to use is securely attached to the ATM itself and not just lightly stuck on. If it is a little bit loose, it could be a skimming device ready to store your information and pin,” said Jackson.

He urged the public to never use an ATM without a security guard stationed at it and avoid too early or too late trips to the ATM.
