AFTER months of practice, Kloof High School’s determined and talented pianist, Rachel Makanha, was recently awarded her Grade 2 piano certification.

The Grade 10 learner was prescribed to play three songs by Trinity College London and she dedicated countless hours over five months to ensure she had perfected them before she recorded herself playing.

Slightly nervous, she opted to do a few takes before she chose the video she would submit.

Rachel has played piano for the past five years and also has a keen interest in hockey and softball. She made it to the second round of KZN trials last year and hopes to make the KZN team this year.

“I love to play piano as it is very relaxing. It keeps me calm and busy outside of my schoolwork. Whenever I feel stressed, I play the piano to get my mind off of it,” she said.

“I would like to thank my music teacher, Heather Wills, whom I have been training with for the past three years. Without her, this would not have been possible. Also, thank you to my parents for helping me discover this passion and for allowing me to do these lessons,” she said.

Kloof High School’s marketing manager, Tamaryn Van Wyk, said, “We are extremely proud of Rachel and would love to see her pursue her passion for music!”
