Runners lace up for iconic PDAC 25km race

The first road race in KZN since the hard lockdown saw 260 competitors sign up to compete.

THIS past Sunday saw 260 runners compete in the first road race in KwaZulu-Natal since March last year: the Pinetown and Districts Athletics Club’s gruelling 25km event from Watercrest Mall to Lahee Park.

The club’s chairman, Lise Muchna, worked diligently and tirelessly to ensure the club was still able to host its race in 2021, while ensuring all of the Covid-19 restrictions and protocols were adhered to.

While 260 runners signed up to compete, there were three starting waves to ensure adequate social distancing. All of the runners were screened on arrival, wore masks before and after the race, social distanced at start and finish and there was a no-touch or post-race celebration.

“The race was a true indication of the ‘new normal’, however, it showed it can be done. A big shout out and thanks to Metro Outer West, Metro Inner West, ER24 and all of the PDAC members for their assistance and support on the day,” said Muchna.

The race winner was Ncedisani Phungula from Hollywoodbets in a time of 1:21:37 and the first female winner was Lisa Collet from DHSOB in a time of 1:41:23. Graham Buck, from Westville Athletics Club, completed his 38th consecutive PDAC 25km race and the 85-year-old Joan Schoeman, from Harlequin Harriers, was the eldest competitor at the race.
