Mozambique Spitting Cobras come out in full force across Durban

The local snake catcher was called to collect two Mozambique Spitting Cobras at the weekend.

AFTER a short reprieve from callouts to rescue Mozambique Spitting Cobras, a local snake catcher, Nick Evans, was requested to collect two in the Durban area recently.

According to Evans, it was the chill in the air that kept them at bay but, with the sun out in full force at the weekend, the warm weather created a suitable environment for them to come out of hiding.

The first port of call was in Westville, which Evans thought would be a difficult catch as it was seen curled up near a retaining wall with thick bush nearby.

“I thought it would see me approaching and flee. Instead, it didn’t move. It was completely lifeless. They’re not Rinkhals, they don’t play dead. If you flip one over, it turns back over again and is ready to move or spit. This one sort of tries to spit, but can’t even open its mouth,” said Evans.

He said it still looked healthy but suspects it may have eaten a poisoned rat.

“We’ll see what we can do for it, but I fear it’s too late,” said Evans.

From there he was called out to Shallcross to rescue a Mozambique Spitting Cobra from underneath a dog’s kennel.

“The dog had been going for it, but miraculously didn’t get spat at. When I flipped the kennel, I got a good spray, but I luckily had my visor on,” said a thankful Evans.
